Kancan’s brand name originates from the cancan dance.

The cancan is a high energy dance that was popular in music halls of the 1840s, and it is still widely known today for the physically demanding choreography designed to complement the flamboyant attire that is traditionally worn by the performers. This dance became an inspiration for our brand name as the active and the lively natures of the dance captured the identity of our denim products. We continually seek to create products that accommodate the wide range of movements that are conventionally uncomfortable to perform in rigid denim clothing. We want our wide-range of customers to feel comfortable while going through their day-to-day actions, and the name Kancan reflects our confidence in our promise to deliver sufficient comfort in our jeans to even perform the cancan dance. Founder and Head Designer

Kancan’s founder and president, Song, started this brand with the immigrant passion towards the American Dream and something much more; his love of denim. Like many others, Mr. Song has majored in clothing and textile. He was already a seasoned innovator in Korea for brands such as Guess and Perry Ellis, and he embarked on his journey of establishing a denim brand in the United States. He derives his inspirations from daily life and his experiences with traveling, so he naturally gathered his inspirations from being a pathfinder and a frontiersman in Europe.

Our chief designer takes his inspirations from watching other creative people interact in the fashion industry. As a successful graduate of FIDM, he values the insights that one can gain from consistent honing of the craft and unabashed experimentations. Significantly, he believes that inspiration can sprout out of anything, anywhere, and anytime; thus he tends to carefully observe people on what they wear and how they wore it.

Although the saying goes that “You can’t judge a book by its cover”, our chief designer argues otherwise as he states “You will always be judged by how you dress”.
